Bayden George is my second son, he is my 14 month old son who has been severely affected by eczema since he was just six weeks old. He has suffered, scratched, bled, thrashed and cried with this affliction. 

It has broken my heart over and over again to see him like this. There were so many times that he just looked so sick. Even as I look at photo’s of these times I begin to sob.

I have never faced a bigger challenge in my life, especially since the answers have been so elusive and so difficult to come by. 

Slow healing and re-aggravation are one of the biggest challenges I faced with Bayden, as I often struggled to see if we were moving forward with the introduction of a new treatment. I have not rested during this time in my search to eliminate his eczema. 

Bayden now has periods where his skin is clear and “itch free”, but we still have to diligently follow many of the instructions and suggestions outlined in this book, to maintain healthy skin and therefore a healthy body. 

It is often amazing to me as a parent, as a result of my experience with Bayden, that when it comes to eczema, the exact opposite of the general idea “that time goes so fast”, is true. I have personally felt that these first fourteen months of Bayden’s life has been an eternity. Bayden has not “grown up fast” as everyone says. When you have a child that wakes constantly, up to eight times a night scratching, that cannot be left alone to their own devises due to scratching, that develops slower (such as later crawling) because they are too busy scratching – time is an eternity. Seven days begins to feel like twenty-one days. Day and night blur. Healing time from flare-ups takes between two and four weeks and beyond.

This has been the hardest time of my life. 

Due to my past experiences with eczema with my first son Elijah (now 3), I was very quick to eliminate common dietary factors in an effort to eliminate Bayden’s eczema. Initially, we started off eliminating all dairy products and all gluten containing foods. 

Food elimination has been a mammoth, challenging task that did honestly, at times, “drive me up the wall”. After 12 long months Bayden has excluded from his diet all dairy products, all gluten containing foods, eggs, soy, citrus fruit, strawberries and berries, bananas, all acid forming foods including tomato, capsicum, coffee, black tea, chocolate, carob, all Salicylates including pumpkin, beef, dates, prunes and all dried fruits, anything with preservatives, colorings or additives (so nothing manufactured). 

I have learnt about so many foods that I would not have previously used and I have learned to cook and prepare food in whole new ways. For this part, I am greatful, because I have learnt so much and have developed so many new skills. So today, we eat lots of very highly nutritious, organic and whole foods. 

Some of Bayden’s food allergies I was not able to work out by dietary elimination, including banana and soy allergies. I utilized blood tests and specifically RAST with the aid of a medical doctor and pathologist. 

I have never used a single corticosteroid cream on Bayden nor has he taken any antihistamine. Out of desperation I did go to our family doctor once about to find out more about these drugs, including Elidel which I was unfamiliar with. After carefully ready the warnings about each of these prescriptions, I decided that I could not choose to expose my son to these further risks and adversities. We soldered on without them, as I knew that these were not solutions anyway but merely band-aids  to cover up the real problem.

I did not return to another medical doctor until ten months later. This medical practitioner specialized in chronic illnesses. We did blood tests, RAST, stool sample, and hair analysis just to name a few. These tests identified that Bayden was suffering from heavy metal poisoning. The doctor believes that the heavy metal toxicity is at the root of the cause of Bayden’s eczema. This has subsequently resulted in the lowering of his immune system, the deficiencies in his bowels, his dietary deficiencies and malabsorption issues.

As a result of these findings Bayden is now taking a children’s multivitamin, cod liver oil with vitamin A, zinc, and iron supplements, as well as several different probiotics of both the bacterial and yeast variety to aid his gut healing.
